Notes from Hannah Eubanks (Desert Oasis):

Hi! I’m Hannah Eubanks and I speak fluent Succulent! I’m a California girl and a San Diego local. My Mom started a landscape business when I was little. She used to pull me out of school to accompany her at new client consultations because she “trusted my eye.” I’m now 25 years old and have been passionately obsessed with garden design for most of my life.

Designing with cactus and succulents is a match made in heaven with our San Diego climate. These versatile plants offer something for everyone. They are visually stunning, easy to grow and care for, thrive in drought, perform well in all types of soil, attract pollinators, and are readily available for purchase at most garden centers. Additionally, some varieties are edible, some are medicinal and when planted en masse, can stop a wild fire in its tracks!

When designing a great cactus and succulent garden, including soil elevations, rocks and boulders is as important as the plants. My display garden includes lots of soil mounding, boulders, dry stacking and a dry stream bed.

The inclusion of these elements is simple enough for any homeowner/diy’er to emulate and will take their installation to the next level! I hope that my submission will inspire our local residents to consider converting their thirsty gardens into a Desert Oasis!

Notes from Hannah Eubanks (Waterwise Paradise):

I’m Hannah Eubanks and I love to graze while gardening. Few things in life are more satisfying than consuming food that you’ve grown yourself. Can I get an ‘Amen’?!

Many San Diego residents garden in small spaces. My display reflects my passion for outdoor living in tight places. A covered seating area, raised beds, gorgeous pots, a fire pit, and succulent Tapestries are all connected by a flagstone path.
With the addition of low voltage lighting, this Waterwise Paradise can be enjoyed both day AND night.

I hope to inspire San Diego residents to consider replacing thirsty, high maintenance lawns with simple and sustainable outdoor living solutions.
While my layout invites you to come in and explore, my display conserves water by containing crops and ornamentals to raised beds and decorative pots. I’ve included destinations with a fire pit and pergola, connected by a flagstone path.

Instead of thirsty annuals, I’ve created colorful “Tapestries” with succulents. These plants provide color, texture and flowers for the pollinators, without the high demand for water and maintenance AND as an added bonus, they look great year round! Out door living really can be attainable and fun for everyone!
