    Monthly Gardening Tips

WHAT TO PLANT EVERY MONTH THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

San Diego is known to have temperate weather year-round but there are still optimal times throughout the year to plant certain flowers and vegetables. Here, we've put together a guide for each month of the year on what is best to plant in your crops and gardens. Note: All information provided is based on typical season, weather and environmental statistics. These tips are provided for information purposes only and to be used as a general guide. Products/Brands mentioned may be discontinued at anytime and not guaranteed in-stock. Grangetto’s invites you to contact us or visit one of our locations for more specific care instructions.

    January

January is generally our coldest month here in San Diego and a wet one at that. Days may be very chilly, but they are often bright and clear with a midday sun that calls you into the garden.

    February

February is a transition month to the biggest growing season for Southern California; SPRING! While it is still winter, spring is around the corner and we often feel it with warmer weather during the day and cooler nights.

    March

Woohoo! Spring is here. March is another one of our prime planting months here in Sunny SoCal. Beautiful colors of early-blooming flowers such as freesias, sparaxis, daffodils and grape hyacinths are sure signs that that spring is here!

    April

March marked the true start to the spring planting season. April and the months to follow are a continuance of March. The weather is getting even warmer and if you didn’t plant last month, you can plant now!

    May

Our gardens are in full swing now or at least ready to be filled with plants! As with last month, regular maintenance and care is required for those plants you have already put in the earth or potted. This is the month that when planted; they take off really fast due to such warm temperatures.

    June

This month is yet again another pick up of last month. Regular maintenance and care is required for those plants you have already put in the earth or potted. You can still plant the same veggies and flowers that you planted in May, but this month is and ideal time to plant a pumpkin for Halloween!

    July

July is a slower planting time compared to spring in Southern California. Most of us have finished our annual planting & veggie gardens in preparation for the summer months of BBQs and lazy evenings in the backyard. If you haven’t done this, don’t worry, there’s still time!

    August

It’s August and we are feelin’ the heat in So Cal! Believe it or not, August is the month to prepare for the fall. “Already?” some might say. Here’s why we start now for fall. August is the best time to plant seeds for annual and biennial flowers and cool-season vegetables.

    September

September is our transition into fall. The nights begin to cool off more so than in the earlier summer months, but the days are still warm and we often have bouts of extremely hot weather and Santa Ana winds. Over the next few months, we switch from summer-blooming to winter-blooming annuals and from warm-season to cool-season vegetables.

    October

Fall is the time to plant cool season lawns, wild flowers and permanent landscape plants except for tender subtropicals and bare root plants. Subtropicals such as bougainvillea, hibiscus, mandevilla and banana are best planted in late spring or early summer when the soil is warm and there is no immediate danger of frost.

    November

If you didn’t finish your fall planting in October; do it early this month. November usually marks the start of the rainy season for us. Prune dense trees and make sure young trees are well-staked now before the winter storms. Now is an excellent time to plant native wildflowers.

    December

As the days grow cooler and shorter, plant growth comes to a near halt this time of year. Be prepared to protect your plants from frost and possibly some dry heat if a heat wave comes through. With all the holiday planning this time of year, you may find yourself too busy to work in the yard. Don’t worry; most plants will do fine with little help right now.
